Questions Answered

Won’t it affect my medications?

Since the procedure of acupuncture does not introduce chemicals into the body, it is safe to take most maintenance medications when undergoing treatment.

Certain medications that inhibit blood clotting are generally compatible with acupuncture but avoidance of deeper and potentially bloody areas will prevent any complications thus it would be good to mention all your medications to the doctor during the interview and examination.

I have a pacemaker.  Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture without the use of electricity (electroacupuncture) does not in any way disturb the function of electronic medical appliances such as cardiac pacemakers. Your acupuncturist will take a thorough history and avoid the use of electricity whenever it is contraindicated.

What about surgery?

While acupuncture is completely compatible with surgery especially in the management of pain, certain procedures that change the internal anatomy drastically should be noted by the acupuncturist to avoid puncturing structures that have been changed by surgery.
